Dental Treatments

Check Up & Clean

We provide dental hygiene appointments to fully clean your teeth and gums and to provide you with personalized advice on your daily dental hygiene routine. Our dental hygiene appointments provide:

  • Dental Hygiene Examination – Look for any inflammation, bleeding and plaque or calculus buildup.
  • Closeup Examination with Intraoral Camera – Our intraoral cameras allow you to view your teeth as we do to assist with evaluating the condition of your teeth and gums and formulating effective treatment plans to promote optimal oral health. Intraoral cameras allow us to include our patients in the process – what we see is what you see
  • Scaling & Polishing – Remove all plaque and calculus with a variety of the latest equipment to remove debris and polish the surface.
  • Fluoride Treatment – Additional fluoride treatments are sometimes recommended by dentists if your teeth are particularly vulnerable to tooth decay. The minerals contained in the fluoride help to repair lost minerals in your teeth, thereby strengthening and protecting the enamel. This simple step can help prevent more serious problems from occurring in the future.
  • Home Dental Care Advice – Ensure you can maintain those areas visibly accessible on a day to day basis in between dental hygiene appointments.

Generally we recommend cleaning every 6 months depending on the state of your dental health, this allows regular evaluations of the conditions of your teeth, gums and jaws. These regular visits allow us to identify any potential problems before they develop into more complicated issues.

Cavities & Fillings

Fillings can be used to treat cavities, decay or to repair damaged or worn teeth. They are also an effective and minimally invasive treatment for repairing teeth that are cracked or broken. If you have cavities, do not wait too long before you treat them. Ignoring cavities will mean lingering pain. If you wait too long, the teeth may need a root canal, a more complicated procedure than a filling. At worst, the teeth may not be savable and you need to extract it.

We use white coloured composite resin fillings free from amalgam or mercury.

Periodontal Treatments

The objective of scaling & root planning is to remove etiologic agents which cause inflammation to the gingival (gum) tissue and surrounding bone.  Common etiologic agents removed by this conventional periodontal therapy include dental plaque and tartar (calculus).

These non-surgical procedures which completely cleanse the periodontium, work very effectively for individuals suffering from gingivitis (mild gum inflammation) and moderate/severe periodontal disease.

Scaling and root planing treatments are only performed after a thorough examination of the mouth.  The dentist will take X-rays, conduct visual examinations and make a diagnosis before recommending or beginning these procedures.

Depending on the current condition of the gums, the amount of calculus (tartar) present, the depth of the pockets and the progression of the periodontitis, local anesthetic may be used.

Scaling

This procedure is usually performed with special dental instruments and may include an ultrasonic scaling tool.  The scaling tool removes calculus and plaque from the surface of the crown and root surfaces.

Root Planning

This procedure is a specific treatment which serves to remove cementum and surface dentin that is embedded with unwanted microorganisms, toxins and tartar.  The root of the tooth is literally smoothed in order to promote good healing. Having clean, smooth root surfaces helps bacteria from easily colonizing in future. During the next appointment, the dentist will thoroughly examine the gums again to see how well the pockets have healed.

Root Canal Treatment / Endodontics

Endodontic treatment (or root canal therapy) is performed to save the natural tooth. In spite of the many advanced restorations available, most dentists agree that there is no substitute for healthy, natural teeth.

Root canal treatment is required when the nerve or pulp within a tooth is exposed or a tooth shows signs of severe trauma or decay. This treatment is utilized to help prevent the loss of the tooth, allowing it to resume proper functionality in the mouth. Though many patients fear having to undergo a root canal, modern tools and technology have enabled this treatment to be virtually pain-free. Today’s root canal procedure is similar in scope to what is experienced during a regular dental filling.

Root canal therapy usually takes approximately three visits to complete. Complete X-rays of the teeth will be taken and examined before the treatment begins.

Initially, a local anesthetic will be administered, and a dental dam (protective sheet) will be placed to ensure that the surgical area remains free of saliva during the treatment. An opening will be created in the surface of the tooth, and the pulp will be completely removed using small handheld instruments.

The space will now be shaped, cleaned and filled with gutta-percha. Gutta-percha is a biocompatible material that is somewhat similar to rubber. Cement will be applied on top to ensure that the root canals are completely sealed off. Usually, a temporary filling will be placed to restore functionality to the tooth prior to the permanent restoration procedure. During the final visit, a permanent restoration or crown may be placed.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

The last molars, called the third molars or wisdom teeth, typically begin to erupt during the late teen years or early twenties. When they don’t have room to grow in, or they’re trapped in your jaw because they are tilted or rotated, they are impacted.

As your wisdom tooth tries to erupt at an angle, it can push on the neighbouring tooth, causing pain and possibly damaging the tooth. Food gets trapped next to the wisdom tooth, making the area a breeding ground for the bacteria that cause decay and periodontal (gum) disease.

An infection may develop around the impacted tooth, and this infection can spread into the face and jaw. Your jaw may become painful and the surrounding gums may swell and become tender.

A fluid-filled sac called a cyst may develop around the impacted tooth; this can destroy a great deal of jaw bone.

You can avoid the pain and possible damaging effects of an impacted wisdom tooth by having it removed early, before its roots are fully developed. We can monitor the development of your wisdom teeth with x-rays, and remove them as soon as we determine they will likely cause difficulties.

Complete & Partial Dentures

Dentures, whether complete or partial, offer an excellent solution for people who have lost several teeth and the tissue around them. The dental appliance is custom designed to fit your mouth perfectly, providing an ideal fit and appearance that matches your natural teeth. Dentures are fully removable. There are two main types of material of choice, being acrylic or metal base.

Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies are quite frightening and often painful.  Prompt treatment is almost always required to alleviate pain and to ensure the teeth have the best possible chance of survival.

Sometimes teeth become fractured by trauma, grinding or biting on hard objects.  In other cases, fillings, crowns and other restorative devices can be damaged or fall out of the mouth completely.  If there is severe pain, it is essential to make an appointment with the dentist as quickly as possible.  The pain caused by dental emergencies almost always gets worse without treatment, and dental issues can seriously jeopardize physical health.

Clear Aligners

Relies on the use of clear plastic aligners that are worn throughout the day except when eating and brushing. The transparency of the aligners makes the dental appliances difficult to detect when in the mouth, thus leading to very little change to your daily activities and appearance during treatment.

The aligners used during aligner treatments are custom fit to your teeth, ensuring a correct and comfortable fit. This greatly reduces the incidence of problems commonly associated with orthodontic devices such as cuts, abrasions, mouth sores, and pain. Users of the product can expect results in as little as six to twelve months’ time; however, more complex dental problems may require longer to correct.

Traditional Braces

Braces are strong and tend not to stain the teeth.  They are comprised of individual brackets which are cemented to each tooth and accompanied by an archwire which constantly asserts gentle pressure on the teeth.  Traditional braces are generally metal but are also available in a clear synthetic material and “tooth colored” ceramic.  The ceramic can become discolored by coffee, wine, smoking and certain foods. If treatment is necessary, we will thoroughly discuss which treatment option is best suited for you!

Teeth Whitening

In Clinic Whitening

A highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide formulation is placed on the teeth in an one-hour treatment. A special product is placed to protect the gums to reduce any risk of irriation.  This product is chemically activated and does not require the discomfort of heat, lasers, or bright lights.  The whitening will last up to six months with even longer lasting results when combined with a take home whitening kit.

Take Home Kits

Whitening is a quick and simple process that can be done at home with custom-made whitening trays.  These trays are worn for thirty minutes a day for two to three weeks.  After the initial two to three weeks of treatment, the trays are then worn for thirty minute two to three times a week to maintain the whitening effect.

Whitening is surprisingly gentle on one’s teeth, even if it is tough on stains. This treatment is ideal for those who are largely content with the appearance of their teeth, but would like to see them whiter. The effects are not permanent, although they last a significant amount of time: patients will require periodic bleaching treatments. A one-hour in-office treatment will produce the same amount of whitening as a two-week home regiment.

Crowns & Bridges

Crowns

A type of synthetic cap typically made from porcelain, are used to restore a tooth’s appearance and function. Crowns are beneficial when a tooth has become so decayed that large portions must be removed.

A dental crown can be used when attaching bridges, covering implants, or preventing a cracked tooth from more damage. In addition, crowns can be applied on top of a tooth to recover the natural appearance of a stained or discoloured tooth. Many materials are available, the dentist will discuss the most suitable options available for your condition.

Bridges

Bridges are custom-made, natural looking dental appliances that are used to replace a section of missing teeth. If gaps between teeth are left unfilled, they may cause the surrounding teeth to drift out of position and result in collapse of your bite.

Bridges help to restore the contour of teeth and can improve the bite between upper and lower teeth, reduce the risk of gum disease, and even improve speech.  Bridges can last as long as 10 years or more, when properly maintained.

We use intraoral scanners to take a digital impression of your teeth and gums. This highly increases the accuracy of the model and improves efficiency of the whole process, whilst taking into consideration patient comfort.

Veneers

Veneers are like small fake fingernail and wafer-thin porcelain facings; they are bonded onto the front side of teeth to correct chipping or changed colour, or to provide minor changes in alignment. Veneers also work very well to close spaces between teeth, mask tetracycline stains, or to change the shape of teeth.

In particular, porcelain veneers, which have been used for decades, bond extremely well with tooth enamel. Even though porcelain itself is a brittle substance, it becomes extremely durable when it is firmly bonded to such a sturdy substance as a tooth.

Porcelain veneers closely mimic the characteristics of dental enamel: dental enamel is semi-translucent, which means that, when struck by light, the light passes through the enamel and reflects off the opaque tooth below the surface.

Because porcelain veneers have the same properties, they too are semi-translucent, light will pass through in the same way to reflect off the tooth below. The use of porcelain veneers thus ensure a more consistent and aesthetically-pleasing smile.

Moreover, porcelain veneers, unlike cosmetic dental bonding, is not susceptible to staining and discolouration: as a ceramic, it has glass-like properties, which means that it is stain resistant.

Composite veneers are another alternative to porcelain veneers. It is fabricated from composite resin material in chair, and completed in one visit. Should it need repairs or replacements in the future, it can be completed in the clinic.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a permanent solution to address problems such as missing teeth that cannot be saved. Today’s implants typically are constructed of titanium metal and placed inside the jawbone. Once securely in place, the implant can then be affixed with an artificial tooth crown.
